the touchy-feely stuff

this is all of the stuff that doesn’t involve a computer, at least most of the time. i’ve managed to acquire a few crafty skills over the years and though i don’t complete as many projects as i would like, i do greatly enjoy the process. most of my crafting experience has centered around the following: sewing, knitting, collage, bookbinding and embroidery.

i also dabble with paintings and artistic pieces, things that generally hang on a wall. i’ve never followed any particular vision when it comes to painting, but instead grabbed whatever medium would work and let my mind wander. some artists have a very direct vision of what they are trying to say in their pieces. me, i just let it all come out and if i like it i’ll show people. don’t ask me what it means because i have no idea. you’ll have to figure that out for yourself.

tools

most tools i use to create these works are fairly obvious; fabric, thread, paper, felt, etc. i tend to buy the middling quality materials, cheap enough to be affordable, but not so low quality that the results are unsatisfactory. i also have a lovely stash of vintage fabrics i’ve inherited from family and i’ve recently started collecting various ephemera for collage work.

watercolor #1

a watercolor image i did about 5 years ago. i played a bit with the paper itself, working around mistakes and incorporating a few oil pastel elements.

gnome hat

the ‘gnome hat’ was knitted on size 8 needles in lion brand ‘thick and quick’. the pattern is from debbie stoller’s ’stitch n bitch’. i worked on it while on the train from montclair, nj to penn station.

messenger bag

the pattern was based on the ‘jordy bag‘, a simple sewing project. i’m incredibly pleased with how this came out. it’s large enough to hold a three-ring binder, but without being incredibly bulky about it. the tan fabric was an ikea curtain that was once used as a slipcover. the lining is vintage fabrid from my grandmother.

mr. dormouse

this little guy is made of felt, fabric and stuffing. the pattern and clothing and such is all original. i’m very pleased with how he came together, especially his little belly. i also like how the shape of his snout came out.

first scarf

a very simple scarf, this was my first ever knitting project. it was started when i needed something to do with my hands, to relax at a very stressful time. it isn’t perfect, but it is wearable and warm and even includes bits of my wonderful braveheart’s fur embedded in the stitches.

mixed media art

i had the idea for this piece floating around in my head for a couple of years before i finally sat down to put it together. it turned out mostly the way i envisioned, with a few happy accidents along the way. the circular pattern on the lower left is formed from nails hammered into the backing and woven with embroidery thread. that was the initial image that came to me and it looks better than i hoped it would.

elemental prayer beads

i made this string of beads to act as i kind of pagan rosary. basically, though, it’s a meditation focus. the charms on the end have words like ‘hope’ and ‘dream’ as well as a couple of crescent moons. loops on the end would allow it to be hooked together with a temporary clasp and worn, if desired. i just like the way the beads sparkle in the glow of a candle.
