the tone of bits and bytes

i started my journey into the world of digital art in the days of photoshop 4.0. as soon as i found out one of my favorite artists, dave mckean, used it, i was determined to figure out how it worked. the steep learning curve took some time to conquer, and i’ll make no claim at being a master, but i do know my way around the program fairly well now.

i like my digital work to not feel completely digital. i try to get some sort of lived-in feeling to it, a bit of wabi sabi to keep it accessible. there are bits of rust and grunge and grime in most of my works, and that’s just the way i like it.

the source images for this piece have been lost to time, along with most of the thought process that went into creating it. what i do remember is that the idea came to me fully-formed and it was a challenge translating that vision onto the screen. there are slight variations, but this is more or less exactly what i was trying to accomplish. i’ll leave the interpretation to you.

queen mab - mother

the source images, once again, are lost to time on this piece. queen mab came to visit me and stayed around for the better part of a week. she’s a very possessive creature, beware if she ever shows up on your doorstep with a quest for you. i learned so, so much about photoshop while doing this piece.

questioning the universe

no photos here, just pure photoshop brushes and trickery. what would happen if we all actively questioned the universe a bit more? what would you ask if you knew you would get an answer?
