raison d’etre

over the years i have inhabited a variety of places on the web where i have displayed my artwork, blogged, and done other creative things, but as it was all hosted on different websites, my work always felt scattered. in creating this site, i am nesting. i am building a virtual home for myself, someplace i feel comfortable and hopefully you’ll feel at home here as well.

my intent is for this site to act as a storehouse for all of my creative endeavors and the fruits of that labor. you’ll find among these pages bits of writing, handcraft projects, photographs and a few moving images.

i also intend to share the inspirations that i have found spread throughout the glorious interweb as well as elsewhere in the analog world. my passion and interests are constantly fed by the work of others and i hope they will inspire you, too.

please enjoy your stay and if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to drop me a line.

artistic bio

i am a comic book/sci-fi, internet computer geek who loves manual typewriters, hand crafts and getting my hands dirty.

the dicotomy of my libra nature has led me down a winding, twisting path, most of which i have to bushwack through on my own.

at 32, i feel confident that i am an artist, even though most of the time i am not confident in my art.

childhood and teen years were spent making music and reading. my 20s were a time of metaphorical bricklaying and ‘finding myself’. it was then that i began gathering the tools and companions (both virtual and analog) that i would need to evolve.

by trade i am a graphic designer (print is my specialty), but my vocation has yet to be determined (if ever).

inspirations

  • apples - fruit of the gods, in my humble opinion.
  • the local library - home to many fine books, movies and other resources. i’m particularly lucky to have a great library so close to home.
  • cookbooks - i love my cookbooks, they keep me inspired every time i come to the stove.
  • dinosaurs - just because they were so diverse and huge and small and amazing.

my heroes

  • dave mckean - the single most influential reason that i started using photoshop.
  • jim henson - integral to my childhood and all-around artistic inspiration.
  • nick bantock - collage and imagination expert extraordinaire.
  • john lennon and yoko ono - chills when i hear his voice, smiles when i read her words.
  • chip kidd - my graphic design hero. he believes that designers need to create outside the realm of design. i totally agree.

the code

this site is powered by wordpress, which i’ve grown to love more than hate over the last year. the flexibility makes it all worth it. that being said, the template is a custom job, handcoded in html, php and css using notepad2. major inspiration must be credited to elliot jay stocks.

the graphics

layout graphics designed by me using photoshop CS. the background photo came from bittbox. the pretty, swirly brush on the header is courtesy hawksmont. the cute little icons are from the silk icons set by famfam.
