huzzah food!

okay, so i’m a bit silly. i signed up to do NaBloPoMo… uhm, that would be the little challenge where you post a blog entry a day for a month. got a bit tired of not posting in here often enough, so you’ll be seeing much more of me over the next month. granted, most of my posts will be utterly boring, but maybe i’ll learn something new from it.

i’m just starting to try stuff here because i need to get motivated, damnit. i’m wasting entirely too much time, time that should be spent on worthwhile things when instead i’m frittering it away. am i being hard on myself? yeah, a bit. too hard? well, i’m not sure about that. i just know that if i’m not willing to push myself, then no one else is going to do it for me.

but i’ve started to digress before i’ve even begun, haven’t i?

so, yes, went out to eat last night in celebration of the vegetarian anniversary.

we went to a place in montclair called Udupi Village. it was both curly and my first real experience with indian food. the best part of this place was that the entire menu was vegetarian. we could order anything off the menu!

we got their madras dinner special:
mulligatawany soup - omg, this was so freakin’ good. so glad i didn’t get the salad.
one iddly - steamed rice & lentil patty. this soaked up the sauce well.
one medu vada - fried lentil donut. melt in your mouth awesome.
curly got the onion and peas uthappam - a savory pancake. i think her’s looked tastier than mine. i love peas.
i got the masala uthappam - potatoes instead of peas. it was okay. tasty, just didn’t really grab me the way i hoped. next time i’ll try a curry.
for dessert we got halwa ice cream - halwa is ground nuts cooked in honey & butter. it was served warm with some delicious vanilla ice cream melting on the top. it was like a cashew/honey pudding sundae. this was too die for.

in addition to all that, we got an appetizer sampler. hey, this was our first shot and we were celebrating. if you can’t pig out then, when can you? the sampler came with:
mysore bonda - brown lentil dumplings. dumplings=comfort food. yum.
vegetable samosa - we brought this home. i’m pretty sure it will be awesome tonight with dinner.
vegetable cutlet - minced veggies (heavy on potato, i think) formed into a patty and deep-fried. this was some of the best comfort food flavor evar.
cashew pakoda - spiced cashew fritters. these were pretty tasty, deep fried, though not our favorite.

and that was about it. whew! we left thoroughly stuffed and will definitely be going back at some point.

throughout the meal we had a great chat, talked about zines and writing, how we wish there was some other way to make money than work and, of course, animal welfare. all in all a great evening.

and now, having written all of this, i’m hungry!

sometimes i lay in bed before getting up and dream up the ultimate computer network for our house. it involves a computer-run media center, many redundant terabytes backup drives and a big networked laser printer.
