elantris - brandon sanderson

elantris

it’s been a long time since i read a fantasy novel that wasn’t tolkien. thankfully, i made a great choice for my return to the genre. elantris is well-written, well-developed and has an intriguing plot with lots of twists and turns that i did not see coming. there are no dragons, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of action along the way.

and it all happens, start to finish, in a single volume. i think that was the most impressive part of the experience. i knew that when i got to the end of the book, i would be at the end of the story. it seems that lately there is a trend toward the trilogy and as such this was a nice change of pace. and yet it managed to not feel rushed. in fact, there were some portions that i wished would have moved faster, simply because i was dying to know what happened next.

anyway, all told this was a great read. highly recommended and all that good stuff.

sometimes i lay in bed before getting up and dream up the ultimate computer network for our house. it involves a computer-run media center, many redundant terabytes backup drives and a big networked laser printer.
