damn-o, seems like forever since i posted anything worthwhile here. must resolve that pronto. lessee…
last week i watched ‘a scanner darkly’. awesome movie. loved the rotoscoping (animation) it gave the whole film a very surreal feeling, while still being so realistic. i hadn’t known who was in it so i was very surprised as the cast started appearing. i’ve got a bit of a philip k. dick thing going on (also recently read minority report) and his stuff has me very inspired. this is the kind of stuff i’d like to be writing, not necessarily the same subject matter, but the same kind of detailed, everyman story.
ahem. and yeah, the worldbuilding is beginning to rev back up as well. (i said something about the everyman, didn’t i? oops.)
had a lovely visit with oqi last weekend as well. feel bad that i didn’t get a chance to blog about it right away, but i got distracted. we at great pizza, drank tea and chatted about writing and crazy family and stuff. i’ve still not used the very cool outlining idea she gave me, but i’m probably going to keep a map going of my nano and use it for that when i start editing.
i’m oh, so very excited about nano. i can’t believe it’s so close! i didn’t do much in the way of outlining or character building or any of that kind of thing. i kinda know where i’m going with it, so i didn’t want to wear the story out before november even gets here. in fact, i haven’t been thinking about the novel i’ll be writing next month. instead, i’ve been thinking about my worldbuilding stuff again.
i was listening to a lecture/presentation podcast the other day with an old-school sci-fi writer, joe haldeman, and he mentioned something that got my brain spinning and before i knew it i had totally revamped how space travel works in my galaxy. i’ve also started mulling around the deep mythology of where humanity came from and how that ties in with one of my characters’ origins.
oh! oh! and guess what! guess what! i am soon going to be the very proud owner of a 1950s royal arrow typewriter!!! squeee! i’m so excited! it’s manual and portable and will probably be as noisy as hell, but it’s all paid for and will be on its way to me soon. *sigh* now i just have to get me’self some ribbon and i’m good to go!
and no, i’m not doing nano on the typewriter. i know of people that do it on the forums and i think that’s a bit of madness. i guess it’s a wee bit better than handwriting it, but the thought of transcribing all of that just gives me the shivers.
my new toy should be here in time for the start of nano though. i was thinking about doing something artistic or something for the month as a companion to the writing (because fuck knows the writing isn’t enough!). i did the podcast last year and thought about doing it again, but decided against it. it would probably just be me all rambly all over again, not exactly the most compelling audio.
instead, i’m thinking about doing a nanowrimo zine. probably some little snippet journals from each day to summarize my progress, random facts about nano and whatever other things i can come up with at the time. i’ll use the typewriter for the text. it’ll be cool.
finally, i’ll wrap up with ‘hot fuzz’. omg, just watched it tonight on a total spur-of-the-moment thing. (started at midnight, because i’m a fool) it was fun and odd and not quite what i expected and also better than i expected. the editing job was really quite brilliant and of course the story was bizarre. and there were a bunch of my fave british actors in there, so who can complain.
bleh, i’m now going into ramble mode as i get sleepier and sleepier writing this. i should go to bed and get some rest. wish i could stay up and work on some other projects i have in mind and do some creative things, but sleep calls.
g’night all!
