and so my thoughts are a bit random. i know i haven’t posted in a bit, so we’ll do a bit of catch up here.
watched Kinsey over the weekend. really good movie. it’s one of those that you watch and think it’s good, but for some reason sticks with you for a bit after. my main observation from it is the way people deal with sex in our society.
‘Sexual Behavior in the Human Male’ came out in 1948. let me repeat that… 1948. ‘Sexual Behavior in the Human Female’ appeared in 1953. since then we’ve had what most call the ’sexual revolution’. the sixties brought the concept of free love and the seventies and eighties were decadent times, halted by the AIDS crisis that continues to ravage our world today.
one would think that considering all of this our society would be less prudish. yet any talk of sex, no matter the context, puts people quite ill at ease. is it the emotion behind the topic? is it simply that people are afraid to admit that they can get lost in the throes of passion and open themselves up? is it a fear that admitting that you are capable of that kind of intense intimacy is an admission of some kind of weakness?
is this all a result of the deep christian guilt that pervades our society so that we are continued to be made to believe that sex is bad unless conception is involved? have we truly not moved beyond ‘procreation only’ sex?
i guess so. that’s so sad.
