and i’m starting with this little fix. i got the title space working on my template. huzzah!
got ebay money to get my replacement secondary hard drive, a ram upgrade for my ibook and some clothes. okay, so the clothes aren’t techie, but i digress.
there is some commotion over on livejournal because it would appear that they are going to go in a myspace-type direction. blech. there are a couple things about livejournal (icons, mood and music bits, crafting and graphics communities) that i enjoy and don’t wish to lose. i just wish blogger had them as well.
of course this gets me thinking about how i have this blog as well as one for my website. i’ve often thought about combining those two, but i’m just not sure. i’ve had this blog for four years now and i think it would feel very strange to not have it. i thought about changing the template, but even that felt odd.
my four blogs basically break down into this:
1) this blog has been with me forever, and i would feel strange losing it, or even changing it, although i would like to have a title option for my posts.
2) my website feels like it’s in its own little world and combining the two would also feel odd. still, i think i could be convinced that they could be friends. and it may make my site look a bit more active than it does right now.
3) livejournal has a lot of ‘play’ stuff. i post memes there, do my little daily icons and have a beatles mood theme. i also tend to change the layout of the whole thing very frequently. it feels rather experimental and i like that aspect of it a lot. i guess as long as i’m able to keep doing what i’m doing there, the adminstrative changes won’t really effect me and matter very little in the grand scheme of things.
4) wee inquiries is its own special project and i really have no reason whatsoever to combine that with anything else. the most i can see doing is changing the template. maybe have something more customized for my purpose there.
or, of course, i could just scrap the whole damn thing and go back to a paper journal. :D
in thinking about all of this, my mind has swirled with possibilities. i’ve ranged from sticking with the status quo to trashing it all to programming my own blogging code to wordpress to every combination of the above.
in other techie news, i’m thinking of reformatting my main hard drive. a tricky propostion, but something i really need to consider. i’ve lost a ton of processor speed over the years and the whole system is just too bogged down.
talked to bear about this quite a bit as i was torn about which software to reinstall. i want to remain as loyal as i can to the open source community while at the same time not sacrificing the intuitiveness i’ve achieved with the mainstream software. i’m going to go for a balance of the two. open office is definitely going on and i’m abandoning ms office. dreamweaver is going back on, as is the adobe cs suite. i’ve got quite a few little programs that are opensource as well, a brush search engine, little media players and such., and the big one, of course, firefox.
my ibook is my ‘hacker machine’. it’s got ubuntu linux on it and is all opensource software. with the ram upgrade, i’ll be able to test a lot of this stuff before bringing it to pc land.
i’m also considering doing a dual boot thing with the dell. i can install ubuntu and have it running as a second boot. could be useful for testing stuff.
first things first, though is making yet another full back up of my hd to be sure i have everything, organizing all my software, downloading new installers for everything and then triple checking to be sure i’ll be able to get everything back on. the whole thing makes me nervous as i’ve fucked up before and lost some stuff.
still, a clean system is worth it. if i can get everything together and order the hd in time, this may be the perfect project to tackle over 4th of july weekend. i’ve got extra time off and no plans. a very good possibility.
cross your fingers for me.
