The loss of a hero…

The scientific world and the world at large has lost a great mind. Steven Jay Gould died of cancer at age 60 yesterday. He was a palentologist (dinosaur guy) who’s largest contribution to science was the theory of punctuated equillibrium. It’s an evolutionary theory that says that instead of progressing at a slow, steady pace, evolution moves in a herky-jerky fashion. He also wrote a montly column for Natural History magazine that made science accesible to the masses using his passions of baseball and church arcitecture. Add to that the fact that he was a lifelong Yankees fan with a great sense of humour, and you have a very interesting person. He will be missed.

sometimes i lay in bed before getting up and dream up the ultimate computer network for our house. it involves a computer-run media center, many redundant terabytes backup drives and a big networked laser printer.
